Rockin’ in the Village Square

A big album release show for The Spark has been set for Friday, May 17th in Philadelphia, PA! This show will be the first in the Village Square series, a new concert series that aims to benefit local organizations dedicated to serving the community. The Village Square project was started by the nationally touring Celtic band Scythian, who will be sharing the bill/stage for the night! All proceeds from beer and concessions [along with 10% of all of Kevin's and Scythian's merchandise sales for the night] will benefit the St. Francis Xavier School Roof Fund. Blood Red Gold

As you may well know, Kevin’s latest album The Spark would NOT have been possible without the committed community of supporters who rose up to fund the project on Kickstarter last Fall. The Spark was released on March 26th and has since inspired a group of young independent filmmakers currently trying to raise funds for their upcoming documentary Blood Red Gold: Mining, Development, and Conflict in Peru. The title Blood Red Gold was inspired by a lyric from Kevin’s song The New World: “…the blood on the money had turned the gold red and when it all disappears, the system is dead…” So if you like supporting the arts and socially conscious causes, please consider supporting this one via Kickstarter today:

Happy Tax Day, everyone! Or not. Whatever. Regardless, today is April 15th, and I’d like to wish a blessed and happy birthday to Emily Stimpson! A great friend, colleague, world traveling companion, and supreme-patroness of the arts, Emily was one of 229 generous backers that helped fund the Kickstarter campaign that made my new album The Spark possible. In conjunction with her contribution she selected the reward that included “a haiku about how awesome you are in the digital booklet (and posted on the homepage of KevinHeider.com on your birthday).” You, the reader, will most likely not understand or fully appreciate this haiku, since it’s based on an inside joke, which I will not explain. But here it is! Happy birthday, Emily! Thanks for your friendship and support!

Getting Lost and Found in “The Great Flood”

A human melody. A divine compulsion. A vague albeit repetitive thought. Water. A simple acoustic guitar riff. All of these elements had been wandering around in my head and dripping from my fingertips for several weeks until one mysterious Thursday evening, about a year ago, when an old man bowed before me in humility to wash the dirt from my feet. In that moment, the substance that had been rustling about and running wild in my head finally found its form: The Great Flood. Images of water started pouring forth from my pen onto my page as I explored the preternatural implications of washing oneself clean and of letting oneself be washed and of all the love that must truly entail. And so this great flood stands as the fulcrum of my latest album[-in-two-parts], The Spark.

Grounded firmly in the middle, the 11th song out of 22, The Great Flood is the climax upon which the album ends its increasingly dark journey of asking “Why?” and begins its increasingly solemn adventure of understanding “Because.” The themes of love and longing and purpose and place that permeate The Spark have all been placed around the album’s center piece: The Great Flood, which is itself kept in time by a subtle beat, a beat that lingers in the end, becoming more clear when the music and the singing fades, a beat that, at the time of the song’s recording, belonged to the heart of an unborn child at 36 weeks in the womb. The child’s name is Pierce. He is my nephew. He lived in water for the first 9 months of his life, and soon he will experience for the first time, though he won’t know it for many years to come, the great flood of grace in which all the lost get found and all the found get lost.

So as you struggle, perhaps in vain, as I often do, to walk amidst the sharp and rugged rocks that bloody our paths and dirty our feet, remember the beat of the heart that’s waiting to burst forth. Remember that it once was yours and that it can be again.
